January 27-30, 2025

 Dear Parents,

What a fast week it has been! Here’s a quick look at what we’ve been up to:

Language Arts
We explored Arctic animals and the Northern Lights through stories and writing activities, sparking the kids’ creativity and curiosity about this beautiful, cold world.

Math
In math, we focused on learning how to tell time, practicing with both analog and digital clocks. The kids enjoyed hands-on activities that helped them get the hang of reading time!

Cooking
In cooking class, we made colourful toasts inspired by the Northern Lights! The students had fun using their creativity in their artistic designs.

Science
We wrapped up the week with a blubber experiment in science. The kids learned how Arctic animals stay warm by feeling the difference between cold water with and without a layer of "blubber."

It was a week full of fun learning and new experiences, and we can’t wait to see what’s next!

Family Literacy Week

Families across Calgary are invited to join the Calgary Board of Education in celebrating Family Literacy Week from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2, with a focus on environmental learning through the theme “Learn to Be Green, Together.”

The CBE Literacy & Early Learning Team has prepared a variety of information and activities to help families engage in meaningful learning at home and school. Reading together or doing learning activities at home is crucial to a child’s learning and development.  Students should be supervised when accessing online content in the Family Literacy document.

January 20-24, 2025

 Hello EES families!

What a wonderful week it has been in our EES cohort!

We continued exploring and learning about Arctic. We have learned about the weather there, its unique nature and living creatures. The most exciting part was to learn about narwhals, their magical  look and habitats.

We practiced to spell and write words and sentences about Arctic animals in Language Arts.

In Math,  we practiced reading both analog and digital clocks and time telling to half an hour.  Learning through play was a fun way to practice it.

We also deepened our knowledge about time by learning what AM and PM mean.

In Science, we learned 10 facts about Arctic and played "Guess the animal" game.

And finally, we created our unique narwhals from popsicle sticks and paper plates in Art.

January 13-17, 2025

 Dear EES Families,

We have done a lot of learning and had a lot of fun this week at school!

The students are working on different skills while focusing on the theme of arctic animals. They have been matching and sorting pictures of different animals, writing words and sentences and using descriptive words in language arts. In science, the students have explored ‘icebergs’ with different arctic animals on theme to learn about how the animals live on the ice and how the ice can melt.  There has been some beautiful art created on this theme as we explore a different arctic animal each week.

In math, students are learning about clocks and telling time. Some students are matching and recognizing analogue clocks.  Other students are practicing telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour! These skills are being reinforced through hands on activities, games and songs.

Students had the opportunity to do some cooking this week. Some students made bagels, in honour of National Bagel Day, and some students made polar bear paw cookies to keep on the arctic animals theme. Everyone had the chance to practice mixing, and they also practiced measuring, shaping dough, and of course - tasting!

The weather is expected to be cold, please ensure that your child has enough warm clothes for outside (boots, hat, mittens, snow pants, coat, etc) and spare clothes to change into in the event that they get wet in the snow.

January 06-10, 2025

 Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are ready to embark on a fresh, exciting start to 2025 with us. We are kicking off this year with tons of enthusiasm, and our students are already diving into fun and enriching learning experiences.

Our theme for the first part of January is "Winter Wonderland," and we’re exploring all the wonders that come with this chilly season. The children have been fascinated by the creatures that thrive in icy, snowy environments, so we’re focusing on Arctic animals. From polar bears to seals, we're learning about these incredible animals and their adaptations for surviving in such cold climates.

To make our learning even more hands-on and creative, we’ve been engaging in crafts. This week, the students made adorable Arctic animals! It was such a fun experience, and it gave the children the chance to practice their fine motor skills while exploring the textures and shapes of these amazing animals.

In our cooking activities, we got into the spirit of the season by baking delicious chocolate chip cookies! The kids had a blast mixing ingredients, measuring, and, of course, enjoying the sweet results. The smell of fresh cookies filled the classroom, making it feel even cozier on these chilly days.

Of course, we always try to balance our classroom time with outdoor play and gym time. Despite the cold temperatures, the weather was perfect for a little outdoor fun. It wasn’t too cold, and the sunshine made it just right for the children to run, play, and enjoy some fresh air.

We’re excited for the months ahead as we continue to explore, learn, and grow together.
