March 17-20, 2024

 Dear Families,

Although it has been a short week at school, it has once again been very busy!

The students finished their St. Patrick’s Day unit on Monday, it was great to see so many students and staff wearing green to celebrate! We have been working on St. Patrick’s Day art, reading, writing, and science. In Language Arts the students read books, listened to read aloud, matched words and wrote sentences all about the things we see on this day.  We also took part this week in the school-wide event ‘Drop Everything and Read’ through enjoying books when we heard the special chimes played on the announcements. What a great way to build a love of reading! The students finished the week by thinking about characters that we see in some of our favourite stories, and having class discussions about how the look and act.  We also celebrated the end of winter, finally! Our lovely Ms. Burton dressed up to sing about the changing seasons in the style of Bruno Mars!

In Math, we have been working on number bonds. The students are exploring different ways to make numbers and how to add two numbers together to make a whole. We are using a variety of visual strategies to make number bonds, such as our fingers, counters and blocks, and listening to math songs to help build understanding of this concept.

The students finished the week with some hands-on science experiments and made some fizzing shapes!  They chose a shape, and used glue to keep baking soda on the lines. They then used their fine motor skills to use a spray bottle to add vinegar to each shape. It is fun to see the fizzing and bubbly shapes appear! We also made green play dough to squish, play with, strengthen student fingers and practice measuring.

It is starting to get more mild outside, which everyone has been enjoying at lunch time on the playground. We are hoping to spend even more time outside after spring break through outdoor learning and community walks.

Thank you to all parents that attended our online Parent/Teacher Conferences.  It is always great to have a chance to connect and celebrate all of the learning and success from the past few months!

March 10-14, 2025

 Hello Families,

This week was filled with curiosity, hands-on exploration, and meaningful connections as we continued our journey of learning and discovery

The Journey of Change: Learning About Metamorphosis

One of our key learning themes this week was the life cycle of a butterfly. Students explored the different stages of metamorphosis—from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally, the emergence of a beautiful butterfly.

To bring this learning to life, students created crafts, using various textures and materials to represent each cycle stage. The excitement in the classroom was palpable as they proudly displayed their creations!

A Special Milestone: Sensory Indigenous Box

Perhaps the most exciting moment of the week was the unveiling of our Sensory Indigenous Box, a project that has been in the works for the past three months. This initiative was designed to provide students with a tactile and immersive experience to explore elements of Indigenous culture through sensory engagement.

The box was carefully curated with a variety of materials that invited students to see, touch, hear, and even smell traditional Indigenous elements. This hands-on exploration provided a meaningful connection to Indigenous knowledge and traditions. Through guided activities and sensory engagement, students deepened their respect and appreciation for Indigenous cultures in a way that was both interactive and memorable. The joy on their faces as they discovered and engaged with each element was truly heartwarming!

OT: Throughout the week, we also focused on developing essential occupational therapy (OT) skills to support students' fine and gross motor development.

March 3-7, 2025

 Hello EES families!

We finally welcomed March! Our students are so excited to learn about this month special days and changes we see around us.

In Language arts, we started to learn about St. Patrick's day and Irish culture and traditions. Working on new vocabulary through writing, reading and game activities was engaging and fun for everybody.

In Math, we continued learning about weight, ways to measure it,  and how to use a scale.

In Science, we learned about rainbow, when we can see it, what causes it. Observing the creation of rainbow colours during Skittles dissolving experience was a great conclusion to our learning.

In Art, we love combining our artistic skills with sensory experiences. This week, we had fun creating rainbows from fruit loops and painting shamrocks with Bingo daubers.

In our cooking class this week, we tried a homemade "Shamrock" (spinach) shake! It was delicious and healthy!
