February 24-27, 2025

 Dear Families,

It has been a very fun and busy week down in EES!  Although we always think about kindness and caring for others, we put extra emphasis on it this week in honour of Pink Shirt Day.

The students learned about the origin of Pink Shirt Day and how it started through songs and read aloud stories.  We also had discussions about ways that we can be kind to others, and how we can grow kindness in our home and school communities. The students did some excellent writing about Pink Shirt Day, and what kindness and caring looks like for us.  We also used Pink Shirt Day as a theme for our art lessons.  The students created beautiful pieces of art using tissue paper, glue, markers, scissors, watercolours, glitter, and a lot of care and love!

In math, the students have continued to learn about measurement. They are practicing identifying items that are heavy and light through using their bodies and balance scales.  Some students are also beginning to learn how to measure the weight of an item in grams and kilograms using a scale. The concept of ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ ties in really well with our science topic this week: sinking and floating. We had opportunities to explore and experiment with items that sink and float, and we tried to make predictions about what would happen when different objects were dropped into water. It was very messy, but also very fun!

The students (and the staff!) are all very happy to have been able to get outside this week for some play time on the playground. The sun and warm weather have been a welcome change from the cold, but it also means lots of puddles! Please make sure your child has spare bottoms and socks at school so that they can change if they get soaked through when they are outside.

Important Information

Black History Month

Students throughout the CBE and here at MTS have been learning about Black History Month. Our students have learned about and discussed what Black History Month is and the history of how it started.. Throughout the month, they will be reading a variety of books and learning about other Black Canadians who have impacted Canada, both in history and in the present day. They will be learning how they showed perseverance and resilience to stand up for what they believed in and fight for the rights they deserved.

The link below is to a playlist of CBC kids videos, books, short stories etc. if your family is looking to explore more on Black History Month.

CUPE Local 40 Job Action

As you are likely aware, CUPE Local 40 members have served strike notice to the Calgary Board of Education. The union, which includes school facilities and cleaning staff, withdrew services on Monday February 24.

Information to families regarding the strike action will be communicated centrally by the CBE – not by individual schools.

February 18-21, 2025

Hello Parents,

We had a wonderful week back after the 5-day break due to the teachers' convention and Family Day! It was a short week, but we packed it with lots of exciting activities and valuable lessons.

In Language Arts, we focused on kindness and how small actions can have a big impact on others. We read the heartwarming book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud, which teaches us about kindness and how our actions can "fill" or "dip" others' invisible buckets. It was a great conversation starter for the students to reflect on their actions and how they can spread kindness each day.

In Math, we continued learning about weights. The students enjoyed hands-on activities to understand the concepts of "light" and "heavy." Using everyday objects, they worked together to compare and measure weights, helping them visualize these concepts in a fun and engaging way.

The gym is always fun, and our students had a great time participating and learning new skills.

 Hello EES families!

It was a short but very productive week full of fun and exciting learning activities.

In Language arts, our students have worked on their writing skills and learned how to write and sign a card for Valentines Day. We practiced spelling , printing and tracing words and sentences.

In Math, we learned about length and measuring objects with non-standard and standard units. Our favorite part was playing with non-standard units and measuring different toys we have in our classroom.

In Science, we learned about human heart, the most interesting facts about it and how to help our heart to stay healthy.

We finished our heart study with delicious toasted hearts!
