May 25-29, 2026

 Hello EES families!

What a gift it was to finally enjoy a full week of sunshine and beautiful weather! We made the most of it by spending lots of time outside, exploring nature, and bringing our learning outdoors. It was wonderful to combine Language Arts, Math, Physical Education, and Science with hands-on activities in the fresh air.

This week in Language Arts, we began learning about farm animals. The children loved listening to songs and stories, guessing animal sounds, and learning the names and habitats of different farm animals. They also practiced recognizing animals in pictures and writing and tracing their names.

In Math, we worked on counting, addition, and subtraction through playful activities. One of our favorite challenges was building fences for our farm animals using blocks. The children guessed how many blocks would be needed to keep the animals safely inside their fences so they would not “run away.” We practiced these skills both indoors and outside, making math active and exciting!

During UFLI, we learned about the “ph” digraph and the sound it makes. The children practiced finding “ph” in words and worked on reading those words correctly.

In Science, we had so much fun experimenting with eggs and creating bouncing eggs! There was lots of excitement and curiosity as we explored how something ordinary could turn into something so fun. Learning through experiments always brings smiles and wonder to our classroom.

In Life Skills, we focused on practicing cutting skills. We reviewed important safety rules for using scissors and knives and practiced cutting different materials carefully and confidently.

Music class was full of energy and joy this week! We sang songs about farm animals, learned movements to go along with the music, and practiced rhythm and listening skills using shaker eggs and other instruments.

May 18-22, 2026

 Dear EES Families,

Although it was a short school week, it was still certainly a busy one!

We have extended our learning around the theme of 'Insects' to focus specifically on bees.  In Language Arts, the students have been learning about the body of a bee, where they live, what they do, and what they look like.  The students have been demonstrating their understanding through writing sentences, tracing sentences, building words using individual letters, matching words and matching pictures.  Each day our topic is introduced with read alouds, songs, and games.

Math lessons have continued to focus on number sense and simple computations.  Some of our students are focusing on identifying the numbers 1-5, 1-10 or 1-20, while others are practicing matching and sequencing these numbers, as well as matching each numeral to an array of items.  We also have some students that are working on recognizing when a '-' or '+' should be used in an addition or subtraction problem, and knowing what that symbol means to solve the problem.  Number lines, manipulatives, songs and games are being used to practice all of these skills.

In Life Skills the students have extended their 'Kitchen' unit from identifying and sorting kitchen items, to using them to practice basic cooking skills.  Everyone has been working on their mixing skills by trying to blend shaving foam and food colouring.  The bright colours help us to know when the ingredients are properly mixed and it allows the students to notice when the are moving the spoon effectively.   Ms. Veronika has also been continuing to teach a modified UFLI program to some of our friends to help them work on their phonics and foundational reading and spelling skills.

To help us finish our learning about bees, we made some beautiful bee art.  The students used sponges to paint yellow bodies, then decided where the black stripes and other features would go.  They turned out so cute!

We were also very lucky this week to meet our new friend, Marshmallow!  He is a very sweet gosling that the Kindergarten class has been taking care of, and they were so kind to let us have a visit.  It allowed us to practice gentle hands, and to learn a bit about what baby geese should be eating (hint: not goldfish crackers!)
