April 20-24, 2026

 Hello EES families!

This week in our classroom, we enjoyed both an outdoor exploration and meaningful learning activities connected to the season.

We didn't want to miss the incredibly warm weather and began our week by heading out on a community walk to visit our Inukshuk playground. Along the way, students explored signs of spring, noticing the warm sunshine, melting snow, and early changes in nature. It was a wonderful opportunity to observe, discuss, and appreciate the environment around us.

In Language Arts, we focused on Earth Day through a variety of engaging activities. Students participated in writing exercises, interactive games, and discussions about how we can care for our planet. To connect our learning with action, students planted seeds and decorated their own pots, showing creativity while learning about responsibility and growth.

In Math, we worked on developing our addition skills using number lines. This hands-on strategy helped students better understand how numbers move and connect, building confidence in solving addition problems.

It has been a joyful and productive week filled with curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning. We look forward to seeing our plants grow and continuing our exploration of the world around us!

April 13-17, 2026

 Dear EES Families,

We had a very fun and very bus week full of learning and crazy weather!

The students have been learning about Earth Day in preparation for our Earth Day celebration next week.  In Language Arts we have been practicing matching words and pictures, tracing sentences, and writing about what items belong in the recycling bin, the garbage, or the compost.  The students have been sorting common items into these three bins, and using songs and read alouds to strengthen their understanding.

In Math, the students have been practicing recognizing numbers, counting, and using number lines to add.  There are a lot of great songs and interactive games that help the students to recognize numbers, learn to sequence them, and practice combining them to get a total amount.

The Life Skills lessons have been focusing on common kitchen items and things that we use to eat.  The students are working on recognizing and identifying spoons, forks, knives, plates and cups and matching real items to the pictures.  Next week we will begin sorting identical and nonidentical kitchen tools.

In honour of Earth Day, the students made some beautiful springtime art!  They created pretty flowers with the planet Earth in the middle, to help us remember how we can take care of our land by taking care of the plants and flowers that are around us.

As the weather has taken a very snowy turn this week, please continue to make sure that your child has appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear so that they can stay comfortable and dry when they go outside for recess.  Thank you!

***We now have two cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in our EES program.  If your child is showing symptoms (fatigue, fever, spots on their hands, face, feet or body) please keep them home as it is extremely contagious.

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity?  This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
