Dear EES Families,
What a wonderful week!
We have been very busy in our classrooms, even though we were short a day due to Truth and Reconciliation Day.
In Language Arts we have been focusing our learning on Orange Shirt Day, which we celebrated as a school on Tuesday. Students have been using songs and games to help them learn about Orange Shirt Day, and we have also been matching letters, words, pictures and sentences to practice identifying key vocabulary. Some students have also been reading and writing sentences and paragraphs connected to Orange Shirt Day and September 30th. It was great for some of our students to attend the Orange Shirt Day assembly on Tuesday that was put on by the Grade 3s - it was interesting to experience music and story telling to learn about the importance of this day.
In Math we have continued to learn about numbers. The students are growing their number sense skills through songs, games, and hands on activities. Some students are working on number recognition, number matching, sequencing and skip counting. Other students are working towards comparing numbers and simple computations.
In Life Skills, we have been learning to set the table with cutlery, plates, napkins and cups. As we approach Thanksgiving next weekend, we are hoping that some of our students will be able to know what items they need to help set the table for a family dinner. Next week we will begin learning to wash dishes, so hopefully they will also be able to help out with the clean up!
We had Science this week, and were able to incorporate the theme of the season and materials found on our beautiful land - we wanted to know, do apples float? We used whole apples, as well as different sized pieces and parts of the apple and dropped them into water to see if they would sink or float. It was very fun to see the apples splash into the water, and it allowed us to make predictions about if they would sink to the bottom or float on the top.
Ms. Veronika helped the students to explore Indigenous music this week through songs and instruments as part of our Orange Shirt Day recognition. Everyone loves the music lessons on Fridays as they incorporate songs, movement and a variety of instruments into a very fun session.
